Dry Harbor? Prohibition in Harbor Springs

On Thursday, August 4, the public is invited to delve into the rarely discussed history of Prohibition, gambling and gangsters in Harbor Springs with a lecture and exhibit reception hosted by the Harbor Springs Area Historical Society. Curator Beth Wemigwase will present an original Harbor History Talk based on the research she conducted to create the exhibit, “Dry Harbor.”

“There are so many craft breweries, pubs and bars around today that it’s hard to believe alcohol was once illegal and beer labeled un-American,” said Wemigwase. “Harbor Springs is a great case study to understand how Prohibition was passed and how the amendment impacted small communities.”

Guests are encouraged to arrive early to explore the exhibit, which includes original artifacts like the iron gate that once blocked the basement tunnel to Slim’s Speakeasy and two vintage one-armed bandits (slot machines). Visitors can also get their mugshots taken next to the Purple Gang’s “Fatty” Bernstein and vote on whether they would have been for or against Prohibition.

Wemigwase’s lecture begins at 5:30 pm with the exhibit opening an hour prior to the talk. Admission is $10 per person and cookies and coffee will be provided. Advanced registration is required.
