    Position Title:  Education Director
    Supervisor:  Executive Director
    Salary:  Beginning salary at $25,000, paid bi-weekly (ie. 26 pays from October through September)
    This position is classified as a Contract Position.  Bay View does not offer a benefits package to Contract Employees.  Flexible work schedule from September through May and on campus full time at least 5 days prior to Assembly Season commencing (ie. mid-June) through the end of August.  Employee discounts on Bay View Association programming available.

    Bay View Association (BVA) is an independent 501(c)(3) and Bay View Real Estate Management, Inc. (REM) is a c-corporation/ subsidiary of BVA. BVA is a National Historic Landmark (https://www.miplace.org/historic-preservation/programs-and-services/historic-landmarks/bay-view-association/) that currently has 445 Victorian cottages, 2 hotels, 30 historic buildings, and 900 members.  Bay View is a Chautauqua on Lake Michigan, offering four program areas:  Performing Arts, Worship & Religious Life, Education, and Recreation.  Cottages may be occupied from May through October.
     
    POSITION SUMMARY & RESPONSIBILITIES:
    Work with 16 Education Committee volunteers and the Executive Director on visioning and planning for each upcoming year as well as for Assembly Season support needs and delegation of tasks to committee members.  Develop annual operating budget ($57K in 2022) and narrative with the Comptroller.  Review program plans and annual operating budget with the Executive Director.  Analyze class data and recommend class fees, minimum student enrollment, instructor compensation.  Liaise with Donor Relations Manager on program funding and equipment needs. Provide course information to Education support person for creating online class registration in ASAP.  Provide class and instructor information to the Manager of IT, Communications and Marketing for publication in Bay View’s summer program by end of January.
     
    Assembly Season Responsibilities (Mid-June through August)

    • Execute classes and special events with the assistance of committee volunteers
    • Consult and advise the sound technicians and IT on recording lectures and other audio/technology needs
    • Keep track of all Loud Hall / Education Program furniture, equipment, and supplies
    • Assist with promoting the education program within the Bay View community and surrounding community
    • Review operating results vs budget and attendance data with Comptroller and Executive Director
    • Timely submission to Accounting of instructors’ and guest lecturers’ pay information and payment requests
    • Manage and effectively communicate class cancellations and other changes
    • Recruit instructors (all months)
    • Communicate with the Donor Relations Manager on all Education fundraising efforts and needs (all months)
     
     
     
     
    Outside of Assembly Season Responsibilities
    • Consult with Education committee and Executive Director in selection of classes, special programming, and guest speakers
    • Ensure that the Education section of Bay View’s website is up-to-date
    • Plan ways to promote the education program within the Bay View community and surrounding community
    • Develop master schedule for classes / events, including locations.  Be mindful of scheduling conflicts with other Chautauqua programs.
    • Customize biographical information provided by teachers and lecturers for Bay View publications
    • Work with other program directors and adjunct committees toward creating inter-program opportunities
    • Provide info to committee volunteer for hospitality needs of visiting authors / lecturers
    • Review movie selections and schedule for weekly Monday night movie offerings with volunteer sub-committee
    • Develop a program offering that facilitates discussions on current issues

    • Communicate with the Donor Relations Manager on all Education fundraising efforts and needs (all months)
     
    JOB QUALIFICATIONS Required:
    • Bachelors degree from an accredited college or university.
    • Ability to work with and direct a team of volunteers
    • Strong attention to detail and organizational skills; positive customer service orientation
    • Strong networking and public relations skills
    • Ability to communicate in writing as well as verbally;  work cooperatively with committee members, other program directors, as well as permanent employees.
     
    Preferred:
    • Knowledge of Bay View Association Chautauqua programming
    • Experience planning, scheduling, and overseeing educational classes, lectures, events.
    • Experience with contract administration
    • Background in budget development and analyzing operating results
    • Proven track record for growing a program and special events
    • Ability to design and/or contribute to the creation of promotional materials
