Antique Vehicle Show - Willys Overland
About 50 rare antique autos will be on display on the waterfront in Harbor Springs from 10 a.m. to 2 p.m. Thursday, June 21. They will be parked on the lawn near the Harbormaster’s building, and area residents are encouraged to stop by and enjoy the antique cars.
The vehicle owners are affiliated with the Willys Overland Knight Registry, which serves enthusiasts throughout the world who are interested in the preservation, restoration and enjoyment of vehicles powered by sleeve valve engines or the related family of Willys Overland vehicles. They were manufactured from 1903 to 1942 in Toledo, Ohio, commonly known as the Jeep plant. The Willys group will be having their international meet at Boyne Highlands starting June 14th.
Group spokesman Greg Gumtow, a resident of South Lyon MI, said their annual international meets are like family reunions. “We are expecting about 50 antique vehicles and just under 200 people from all across the country and the United Kingdom,” Gumtow said. “Want to know what a sleeve valve engine is? You can Google it or stop by and see for yourself.”
The group will start arriving at Boyne Highlands Thursday, June 14th for their Road Runner tour. Friday morning 20+ antique cars from 1912 to 1935 will be leaving for a 500-mile Circle Tour, stopping at a number of interesting points in the Upper Peninsula and returning to Boyne Highlands Sunday about midday.
More families will be arriving Sunday afternoon and into Monday. Monday afternoon is their Welcome Picnic at the Little Traverse Bay Golf Club. Tuesday they will visit Mackinaw City and Mackinac Island. Wednesday is Lighthouse tour day, driving through the Tunnel of Trees and visiting McGulpin Point. Thursday, June 21, is their visit to the Harbor Springs waterfront from 10 am until 2. "You may see us out and about touring during the day," Gumtow said. "In the evening the cars will be on display in front of the Day Lodge at Boyne Highlands. Visitors are always welcome."
Gumtow appeared in front of the Harbor Springs City Council in May to gain approval to use city property for the June 21 event. “Many thanks to Mayor Brown, City Manager Tom Richards, The City Council, the Harbor Springs Chamber of Commerce and the DDA for welcoming us to the city,” he said.Antique Vehicle Show - Willys Overlan...Date and Time
