The Harbor Springs Festival of the Book presents journalists Casey Cep, Becky Cooper, and Patrick Radden Keefe in a discussion of their work as investigative journalists during this virtual event on Thursday, June 19th at 7 p.m. EDT via Zoom. Moderated in conversation by Mardi Jo Link, the panelists will share stories of their research, discoveries, and obstacles to overcome in their search for the truth. The event is free, but registration is required at hsfotb.org/tickets. Through her story of a serial killer in the South and Harper Lee’s involvement as a court reporter on the case, Casey Cep shows that the tendency to rewrite history has existed for centuries in Furious Hours. As we read of Jane Britton’s brutal murder at Harvard in 1969, we learn, as Becky Cooper does, that a culture of silence still exists, especially in academia in We Keep the Dead Close. And by taking a deep dive into the annals and legacy of the Sackler dynasty, Patrick Radden Keefe illustrates how human greed can simultaneously build an empire and destroy a nation in Empire of Pain. What these three writers show us through their meticulously researched and unflinchingly reported books is that answers can be found by those who ask the questions.
