    The first newspaper in Emmet County was founded by Rozelle Rose in Petoskey in 1875. He printed on a headpress, feeding each sheet into the press one at a time. He had to repeat the process to print the other side. The pages were then hand inserted together and hand folded.

    That same year, The Little Traverse Republic was founded in Harbor Springs by Warren Bowen. Three years later, in 1878, two ...more papers emerged, The Emmet County Independent in Harbor Springs, the Petoskey City Record, and a summer supplement called The Daily Resorter.

    Over the years, these diverse editions were bought, sold and changed names to finally consolidate as The Emmet County Graphic in Harbor Springs and The Petoskey Evening News.

    In the 1930s, William F. Schaller stepped into the press picture and started The Northern Michigan Shopping Review, which soon changed its name to The Northern Michigan Review. In 1953, The Northern Michigan Review and The Petoskey Evening News merged under the name Petoskey News-Review with Albert Schaller as publisher.

    In the late 1950s, the News-Review merged with The Emmet County Graphic. Today, the News-Review prints a 5 days a week daily edition and a separate summer supplement called The Graphic.

    The Schaller family was the guiding force behind the daily paper in Northwestern Michigan beyond Traverse City for a half-century. At the time of his death on July
